Olympian Steve Cram completes "tremendous" Mount Everest climb

A recent climbing holiday to Nepal saw Steve Cram complete a "tremendous" scaling of Mount Everest.

The former Olympic athlete took on the peak with Alison Curbishley and 19 other adventurers to boost the coffers of the Comrades of Children Overseas charity, gaining the praise of Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn.

Alongside raising cash, the pair wanted to raise awareness of Sunderland's bid to be a host city if England is voted as the World Cup 2018 venue.

Cram said it was a difficult challenge, but one that helped to highlight two important causes.

Quinn commended the team for their feat, adding bringing a major soccer event to the north-east could "enrich lives".

Families looking for their own adventure in the Himalayas could enjoy the Everest Teen Trek Teenage Adventure, which places more of an emphasis on the scenic than challenging.

The Everest Base Camp option in the Khumbu region could be an interesting trip, while the Everest Gokyo Lakes Trek lasts 11 days and takes in the region's magnificent water features.
