Michael ZAFINIMBINY - Group Leader Madagascar

What is the best thing about your job?

Travel and experience are education in itself. I like travelling and meeting lots of people with different nationalities that can help me to know much about the others cultures exist in the world. I am also very proud to be Malagasy and love to show people the best of my country & culture. It is even more fun to me to guide a tour when I am with families. Kids are really the best tourist ! always so interested in every single thing they see, and sometimes surprised not meeting “Alex”, from the movie !

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

The new experience and the first time for the tourist to travel by the famous local transport which is the zebu chart, they didn’t know that we can use them for transport as well not only for meat shaking on top and riding very slowly or “Mora Mora” in Malagasy language.

What is the best place to visit in your country?

Madagascar is a really beautiful and young country I mean young culture and know recently as a tourist destination because of its different types of National Parks from the rain forest where are living many species of lemurs in wild until the dry forest. Exactly wherever you go in the island is beautiful and amazing. The typical Malagasy villages with the eighteen different tribes offer and show you their own culture.

What is the most interesting custom in your country?

Exhumation or “turning of the dead” (Famadihina), very famous in my country especially for the people living in the highland. It’s a really big ceremony during which we kill a zebu, we drink local alcohol and dance, changing the clothes of the dead with a new dress. It is a celebration in the death person memory.

What is your life motto?

My life motto is giving the best of me to explain the real event by truth and full honesty

What are the most important items to pack for your tour?

As we are in the south part of the continent I recommend you for and there are actually two different weather which are cold and rain and sunny hot;

-rain forest: rain coat, walking shoes, mosquito spray, small torch for nocturnal walk

-dry area: sun glass, sufficient medicament just in case, sun cream, binoculars
