Flight disruption due to Volcanic Ash ~ how are you getting on with your insurance claims ?

Welcome Guest, to make a post on the forum you need to login or register.

Have started the process of trying to claim from Insure & Go for an 8 day delay getting home from my Cuba trip.. Although their policy claims to cover delays due to poor weather conditions ( such as fog and dust storms) they have declined to pay the Volcanic ash cloud claim. Other companies are however treating thie Volcanic ash as a weather condition so I fight on.

I suspect this matter will roll on for months. Probably will refer the matter to the Financial Services ombudsman ( a free service)

How are others getting on ? Has anyone managed to get an Insurance Company to pay out ?

I have managed to claim through Towergate Chase Parkinson, its took a while, but got there in the end. We were delayed for 9 days in Sri Lanka.
Keep trying and good luck to both of you.

Hi there,

Yes I've had the same respons from Insuare and Go. Apparently, 3 out of 4 insurers are refusing to pay out - it would be interesting to hear from the 1 in 4. Keep us posted if you make any progress.

Many thanks,

After fighting settlement of the 2010 Volcanic Ash Cloud claims for the last 20 months all the way to the High Court, Europ Assistance have finally conceded that payments to customers should be made. It is now clear in law that an ash cloud, just like any other cloud, contributes to weather conditions.

My policy for my TAC Holiday to Cuba was issued by Insure & Go, Europe Assistance were the underwriters. Back in the spring last year the Financial Ombudsman reported there were 700 disputed claims on their books.

Following their adjudication most Insurers settled. Europ Assistance did not and insisted in prolonging the matter for 300 claimants by wanting a High Court ruling.

We now have that judgement. They cannot continue to wriggle out of their responsibilities to the consumer.

Insure & Go are not the only Insurer who have used, Europ Assistance as their underwriter. A number of popular brands use this same underwriter.

If you were stranded in your travels in May 2010 and were either disuaded of making a claim or had a claim rejected it might be worth digging out any old documentation you had on your travel insurance at the time.

If the policy contained a paragraph which defined how you would be compensated in the instance of travel disruption due to adverse weather conditions you are probably due some recompense providing the Insurer did not specifically exclude Volcanic Ash Clouds in their small print.

You never know ~ the claim settlement will not make you rich but you may get something back to help finance the deposit on your next TAC adventure. Worth a try.
