My wife and I did the Base camp trip 3 years ago and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. The guides are brilliant, the scenery is spectacular and the people are friendly. It is hard work, especially if you want to do Kala Patar the day after base camp but it is certainly worth the effort. For training purposes we went out walking every other weekend and did about 15 miles each time we went out. We also did a weekend in the lakes and Snowdonia prior to the trip but nothing prepares you for the altitude if you've never experienced it before. The guides take their time with you and drink plenty of water....Enjoy

Hi guys,

I'm booked in as a solo traveller too ,never done anything like this before apart from go up Snowdon a couple of times recently!
Not started training yet, but will have to now its only months away, do you guys have any idea what level of fitnes we need to be at, I can walk endlessly but have a hate for running!

Am glad I'm not the only solo traveller, I couldn't get any of my friends to join me on the trip

Looking forward to meeting you all,

I think there are a few more solo travellers on this trip from talks with the guys at TAC.

I've been told that the trip is similar in difficulty to the Annapurna Circuit, which I did a couple of years ago (max alt 5,416m, so similar). There was one day which had a 1,600m climb, which was very tiringm, and almost broke me! However, I'm by no means an expert. A decent level of fitness is needed but you don't need to be a marathon runner (at least I hope not!). What is more important from my previous trekking experiences is how your body reacts to the altitude, and a damned good pair of walking boots! I remember there being people a lot fitter than I struggling with headaches and nausia. Fortunately, I did not suffer with AMS too severely.

How your body will react to the altitude is something you can only really find out, and appreciate, once you are there and hopefully nobody in the group will suffer too badly. The guides will have certain drugs that help to dull the symptoms in any case, so long as it is not too serious.

The trekking will be at a steady pace that everybody is comfortable with and they build in potential overruns into the days walking if things are going a little slower due to bad weather etc. One of the most testing parts of the trip as I remember is the cold, as soon as you get above 3,000m it starts to get very cold. At 5,000m it was -22 in the shade and -20 (celsuis) in the sun. Probably colder at night. The cold means that your tendons and muscles will be tighter than normal, which makes it that bit harder and tiring.

I am sure you will be fine, once you set off at the higher altitudes where there is less oxygen, you move into a steady rythym of breathing and walking which compliment each other.

I'm really looking forward to the trip now, the people in Nepal are amazing and the friendliest I have come across. I have started to get my gear together in anticipation, probably a bit early for that though!

Hi all, looking forward to meeting all of you- the beer warmup sounds good to me. I'm Tim Roberts on Facebook and I'm standing in front of a tree. (not all the time- work, home etc take me away from the tree occasionally)

(This may work but I can't be certain- poor IT skills)

I'll be travelling with work colleagues Dave and Glenda. Not taken anything on like this before and i'm a little apprehensive so I hope you're all prepared to do piggybacks.

Chicago seems like an odd way to go... I am going via Delhi and booked via TAC. Jet Airways I think.

You should be flying with Jet Airways if booked with Ad Co and you'll be on same flight as us as we are doing the Wildlife Safari in India. We flew with JA when we went to Nepal 3 years ago and they are a very good airline
