The largest country in the world, Russia is home to a wide variety of cultures and a lengthy history that encompasses the some of the greatest events in world history. The sheer scale of the country gives a huige diversity in the landscape, from the great steppes of the east, the frozen Arctic fields of the north to the greener pastures in the west. Russia is also home to some of the greatest cities in the world, in particular Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as the great cities in the area now known as the 'Golden Ring', former capitals of the Russian state. Moscow grew from a small provincial outpost to bceome the current capital of Russia. Here you will find such impressive sights as St Basil's cathedral with its onion-like domes and the fortress complex of the Kremlin, which dominates the city. By contrast, St Petersburg is an orderly, Europeanised city with a fascinating collection of historic architecture and musems. Russia is known for its artistic prowess, ranging from ballet and theatre to classical compositions, along with the architecture. All of which comes to represent this incredible mix of cultures that make up this great country.
