Aussie slang words you might need to know

G’day. You might have heard that we’re part of the Intrepid Group, our Aussie sisters, and being sisters, you’ll often find a few Aussies in your group next holiday. And they make great friends, but sometimes, are they really speaking the same language? In celebration of Friendship Day this past week, we’ve knocked together (and then decoded) our favourite Aussie slang that you might hear on the road with The Family Adventure Company.

Ace – Excellent
That was well worth the trek for the ace view of Machu Picchu this morning.

Arvo – Afternoon
Not to be confused with ‘Avo’ (Avocado).

Bonza - Ripper
Likely to be mentioned at the dinner table to describe the day you’ve just had.

Burl – A try
Choose an active trip and you might be able to give something a go for the first time.

Chocka – Full up
We often travel on buses with locals so you might find them to be chocka every now and again.

Choosdee - Tuesday
Not a choose day but the day after Monday and before Wednesday.

Daggy – Uncool
Your dad is real dag with his socks and sandals.

Deffo – Definitely
We’ll defo grab a tuk tuk to the night market tonight.

Dinky-di – The real thing
You’ve seen the pictures but nothing compares to the real thing.

Devvo – Devastated
What the kids might be feeling once the holiday comes to an end.

Fair dinkum – True
Also known as ‘true blue’. We use local operators to help bring our destinations to life and make sure you receive fair dinkum experiences.

Festy - Disgusting
Overnight train toilets can sometime become just a little festy.

Going off – Good fun
Probably how you’d describe one of our holidays if we do say so ourselves.

Grouse – Great
That wall was Grouse.

Heaps – A lot
While our trips are paced for kids you’ll still see heaps.

Knock back – Refuse
If you’re offered a ride on an elephant we encourage you to say no.

Larrikin – A rowdy but loveable young person
Travelling with us you’re likely to have a group of larrikins.

Macca's - McDonald's
Where you won’t be eating on our trips.

Mozzie – A mosquito
In tropical areas, carry some insect repellent to avoid being eaten by some mozzies.

No worries – No problem
"Hakuna matata".

Poo-tickets – Toilet paper
It can be a good idea to carry some poo tickets whilst travelling in remote destinations.

Pozzie – Position
Everyone find your seats on the bus/truck.

Strewth – Crikey
“Strewth, I never knew that”. A typical reaction to learning an interesting fact off one of our local guides.

Ranga – A redhead
Better make sure they have the SPF50+ with them.

Ridgy-didge – Genuine
Our leaders.

Sanger – A sandwich
Usually containing vegemite (and cheese) but why not try a local variety whilst travelling with us.

Stoked – excited
If the kids are awake before 6AM it’s probably because we’ve got something cool lined up for that morning and they’re pretty stoked.

Thongs - flip-flops
Lots of the properties we stay at have swimming pools so make sure to pack your thongs.

Tucker – food
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to try the local tucker whilst exploring on our holidays.

Woop woop - isolated place
Leave the major cities and beaten trails behind in search of local communities in woop woop.

Youse – you (plural)
Likely to be used at the end of your trip, “I’ll miss youse”.

Happy Friendship Day!
